House Mice are the most common rodent found in Ohio homes and businesses. They are grayish-brown in color and have lighter colored bellies. They have short hair that also covers their tails. House Mice like to feed on nuts and seeds preferably, but certainly won’t turn down an opportunity to eat other foods.
They enter buildings for both food and shelter and can be especially prevalent as the colder weather begins. Though you may not see any activity during the day, you will see evidence of their presence from their rod-like droppings. Here is a sound clip of a mouse:
Rats found indoors, most commonly Norway Rats, are brownish in color and have shaggy hair. They have scaly tails and ears. Rat excrement resembles a capsule shape.
Rats make their homes near water sources and usually in underground burrows. They eat any food, including smaller rodents. Rats are mostly nocturnal, and a sighting in daylight can indicate a large infestation. Rats can cause damage with their sharp teeth by gnawing through materials to get to food or water.
