Spiders

Ohio has more spiders than most people realize. We clear the webs, treat where they hide, and keep them from moving back in.

Ohio spider identification

Every spider Ohio homes see — handled.

Some spin webs in the corner, some hunt on the ground, and a couple are worth double-checking. A&J treats them all — and clears out the webs while we're there.

Common house spiders

The cobweb builders in corners, window frames, and basement ceilings

Cellar spiders

Long, thin "daddy longlegs" that hang upside down in basements and garages

Wolf spiders

Big, fast ground hunters that wander indoors in late summer and fall

Jumping spiders

Small, fuzzy, and curious — usually spotted on sunny windowsills and walls

Grass spiders

Funnel-web builders in lawns, shrubs, and gaps along the foundation

Orb weavers

Classic round wheel webs between shrubs, eaves, and porch lights

Yellow sac spiders

Pale, active at night — the usual suspects behind most indoor spider bites

Northern black widows

Rare in Ohio, but they show up in sheds and crawl spaces — we confirm before treating

Brown recluse

Uncommon here, but worth identifying — send us a photo and we'll tell you for sure

Step 1 — What to look for

Signs you may have spiders

  • Cobwebs in corners, along ceilings, and around window frames — especially upstairs
  • Webs rebuilding under eaves, porch lights, and outdoor fixtures days after you knock them down
  • Egg sacs — small silk balls hanging in webs or tucked into quiet, undisturbed spots
  • Spiders scurrying when you move boxes in the basement, garage, or attic
  • Funnel-shaped webs on the lawn, or classic round wheel webs between shrubs and railings
  • Spiders wandering indoors in late summer and fall as the weather cools down
Step 2 — How A&J treats it

Our treatment, start to finish

  1. 1Identify which spiders you're dealing with — web-builders and wandering hunters need different treatment
  2. 2Knock down every web and egg sac we can reach, inside and out — removing the next generation matters as much as the spiders
  3. 3Treat basements, crawl spaces, window wells, and other quiet harborage spots where spiders settle
  4. 4Apply an exterior barrier around the foundation, eaves, and entry points — cutting off the insects they feed on stops new activity
  5. 5Follow up through the season — most homes stay clear with regular quarterly visits

Porch corners and railings are classic web-building real estate. We knock it all down and treat the spot.
Step 3 — Keeping a safe, healthy home

How to keep them from coming back

  • Swap white porch and garage bulbs for warm yellow LEDs — they draw fewer of the insects spiders eat
  • Cut the clutter in basements, garages, and closets so spiders have fewer quiet corners
  • Seal gaps around doors, windows, the foundation, and utility lines
  • Keep shrubs, firewood, and stored items pulled back from the foundation
  • Knock down webs as soon as you see them — spiders abandon spots that keep getting disturbed

Frequently asked

Are Ohio's spiders dangerous?+

Almost all of them are harmless. Brown recluse and black widow spiders are rare here, but if you think you've seen one, trap it in a jar or snap a photo and we'll identify it for you.

Why do I see more spiders in the fall?+

Late summer and fall are mating season, and wandering males head indoors looking for mates. It's also when the insects they hunt move closer to warm houses.

Does spraying actually work on spiders?+

Spraying spiders directly isn't the whole answer. We remove webs and egg sacs, treat the quiet spots they hide in, and cut down the insects they feed on — that's what keeps them from coming back.

What about the really big ones?+

Wolf spiders look scary but are harmless — and they don't build webs. They wander in from the yard, and our exterior barrier stops them before they reach the door.

Do you guarantee your work?+

Yes — if spiders come back between visits, so do we, at no extra charge.
